this is a feeling I grew up with as well. while I’ve never been wholly a part of any one of my mix of cultures and ethnicities, I have managed to no longer mind the people who would exclude me from any one of them. the experiences of my ancestors are written in the cells of my blood – I know who I am and where I come from, and no one has the right to define me to the contrary of my own story. we are so much more than just one aspect of ourselves.

I have a Gitano friend who has green eyes and chestnut hair.Non-Romani people keep telling him he cannot be true gitano.I can imagine how you feel. I am North-Hessian with huguenot ancestors. We speak a mix of North Hessian dialect and French mixed with Occitan. Once I spoke to a guy who lived about 30 km from my home. For some reason he doubted my ancestry (my mom married an outsider), and made awful jokes about me to his friends. I was terribly offended. Sometimes people are just awful.We shouldn’t even listen. But I do not know if you can avoid listening to them. Love, Paulina.

bell hooks used the word “victimage” in the quote I chose to use from her work. Taken in the context in which she uses it, victimage can be see to be the state of being a “victim”. I think she uses it purposefully to distinguish it from victimization (“to make a victim of”) and victim (“one that is acted on and usually adversely affected by a force or agent”).

Nevo Porrajmos.
And a world who once cried “never again” turns its head, closes its eyes, covers its ears, and ignores what very real, very scary reality is presented them as if on a silver plate, so it ought to be seen by all — yet is seen by none.
Never again? Are those merely ghostly words, that now, like smoke, drift into the air? You’re so right: where are the human rights groups, where are those in positions of power and respect stopping this? They are silent.
And what do the people do, the ones who lack titles, the “common” people, who lack stupid political backgrounds paid for by previous generations?
Something HAS to be done.
Hungary now. And when they take action, what will they do?
Hungary now. And where, next?
The insidious way the Porrajmos began was unknown to many in the western world.
There simply cannot be an insidious beginning to a Nevo Porrajmos.
Never again, they said.
Without care, it WILL happen again.
What I can think of for now, whether it even makes a difference, is not to write to the men who are intent on creating this new holocaust of the Romani, but instead to write — to flood, with e-mail and paper mail, even phone calls — the leaders of the United States, of Western Europe, of the United Nations, of every single human rights organization that might be relevant.
Write to any and all major news outlets and newspapers, including Bayer’s words. Let them all know: this time, WE KNOW. And we will not silently let a new Porrajmos occur while we watch from afar.
Publicity, shaming of these “ministers” who speak so ill of the Romani people, informing as many people as possible about exactly what they are saying, and what it means to us as Romani or part-Romani people, many who lost family and friends in the Porrajmos.
Information — publicity — attention — if the world knows, I can only hope that the coming of a Nevo Porrajmos might be halted. -Mala
